• JANUARY 2022 | FLAT LAY CHALLENGE - ROUND 2 from DAWN BY DESIGN

Hi, everyone! My name is Dawn, and I'm the designer behind Dawn by Design. Welcome to a new year of challenges at The Digital Press! We are glad you are here.

The challenge I'm hosting is a FLAT LAY CHALLENGE. You may remember this successful challenge from LAST January. (How is that even possible that it's been a year since then?!)

A "flat lay" image is one that's taken from directly above the object(s) being photographed. I first remember seeing this years ago, when the Martha Stewart brand came out with a cooking magazine called Everyday Food. I loved that magazine! I was a mom of littles, living in different states from where I'd grown up, away from friends and family, and almost everyday I would look forward to that evening when I would try a new recipe from one of the magazines. It was the highlight of my days at that time, learning to cook. And I loved the flat lay photography for the recipes (although I didn't know the name of the style at that time). You may also have seen flat lay images from your favorite style influencers when they post pictures of outfits they've planned and have laid out all the pieces on their bed and snapped a photo from above.

For our challenge we won't be using food or clothing flat lays for our inspiration. We'll be using flat lay interior design mood boards! I have a Pinterest board dedicated to this challenge which you are free to use for your inspiration. Alternatively, you can do an internet search for "flat lay mood board".

The main rule for this challenge is to scraplift your chosen flat lay image by replicating the shapes and layout of your mood board (as faithfully as possible) in your scrapbooking page. After that's done, you may use the image for any other inspiration you'd like: texture, pattern, color, etc.

When you post your page to the challenge, please also post a link to your original image inspiration. Thanks for playing!
    .

Here's a the pin that inspired TDP Creative Team member Carrie and the page she created.

Oh what a great challenge! I chose this pin as my inspiration:

      and made this layout:

I loved the colors, the number of rectangles / squares for my photos, the little bar thingy (for my tag), and the little round tab too!

Great job, mocamom ! I love your inspiration photo and looking between that and your page to see the things you kept and the things you modified. And what an emotional topic. <3 I hope your mom and you all are hanging in there! Thank you for playing.

Dang, tiffany scraps ! I love how faithful you were to your inspiration image. It's a perfect one to base a scrapbooking page off of! The element cluster on the edge reminds me of how butterflies flutter all around when you're in one of those conservatories. Thank you for playing!

corrin - Nailed it! I see how you rotated your image (what a perfect inspiration design!). The font mixing, title placement, and embellishment cluster are perfectly done. I love the "sibling selfie"! <3 Thank you for playing.

ClaireG - I loooooovvveeee the colors and pattern mixing you've chosen here! And that paint and the textured solid paper, too. I clicked through to see your page in the gallery and saw what you wrote about improving from this time last year, and I totally see that! You picked a great inspiration photo and I love where you took it. Thank you for playing!

It was so much fun to make a template from the mood board! Way cool challenge, thanks!
      Here's the mood board inspiration:

And here is what I came up with, inspired in part by the pink/green/tan colors, the high shadows, and the feathery look of the foliage.

@Sharon Weill - yep! I see all those things you mentioned that you were inspired by. Love that you were able to find something feathery to go along with your inspiration photo. I enjoyed looking back and forth between that and your page to spy all the shapes and and placements you were matching up. Nicely done! Thank you for playing.

This one is so cool because of the angle of the photos! I like how your background paper is a similar color scheme as the inspiration photo but then there's all these bold photos and colors on top of it. Thank you for playing Hillary ! You perfected the challenge, as always.

I was eyeing that inspiration piece myself wvufan04 ! So simple and straightforward and perfect. You did a lovely job with it! I like the black and white against the colored papers and the perfect little amount of clustering to draw your eye to the photo and journaling. Well done. Thank you for playing!
