    DSD Challenge | Slow Scrap

Happy DSD Weekend!!! I can’t believe it’s finally here. I plan my whole weekend around the games, chats, and challenges. Anyone else do that???? Speaking of challenges, I’m hosting the Slow Scrap challenge this morning. Throughout the day we will chat here IN THIS THREAD and I’ll post instructions below.

Before we get started with the actual scrap and chat, let’s make sure you know the basic rules. First, all pages need to be created using 100% TDP products, which includes freebies or retired products. Second, you have 24 hours to play, so your layout must be posted to the Challenge Gallery by 11:00 a.m. ET on Sunday, October 6th. I’d love to see your pages linked in this thread as well please, so we can see each other’s beautiful layouts and leave some love! Don't forget, if you post your page, your name will be entered into a drawing for a CHOOSE YOUR OWN PRIZE! How fun!

    Alrighty then. Here we go!!
    1. Place a patterned background paper on your page.
    2. Center about a 2 x 6 inch rectangular paper on the middle of the page horizontally.
    3. Next put a 1 x 7 inch rectangular strip on top of the bottom rectangle horizontally so that about a half an inch of the bottom paper peeks out underneath the top piece. Nudge the top piece left so that it sticks out on the left side of the bottom piece about a half inch as well.
    4. Choose a horizontal 3 x 5 photo AND either a 2.75 x 2 vertical photo or journal card. Layer the large horizontal picture so that it’s left edge is about 4.75 inches from the left of the page and about a half inch of the top rectangular paper peeks out underneath it.
    5. Layer the journal card or photo on top of the big photo so that its right side slightly overlaps the large photo. Tilt the card just a tad to the left.
    6. Add a 0.1 x 6 inch piece of trim, ribbon, paper strip, etc. on top of the large photo, covering up the bottom edge. Nudge it to the left so that the left edge of your trim will extend some off the left side of the top paper strip.
    7. Add a large title / word art under the rectangular paper strips.
    8. Add a banner to the top right side of the layout.
    9. Add a small element where the right bottom corner of the journal card / photo overlaps the large photo.
    10. Add any other embellishments, journaling, paints, etc. that you like!
That's it! I hope you have fun creating your layout and since you have 24 hours to do so, you can relax and enjoy the process!! I'll post my layout tomorrow when the challenge closes

    A recap of the rules:
    1. You must follow the instructions above, but feel free to add anything additional you'd like to make this layout your own.
    2. Your layout must use 100% TDP products.
    3. You must post your layout in the TDP Challenge Gallery and then start a post in this thread and link up the image (and link it to the gallery post).
    4. Your layout must be posted in this thread no later than 11:00 am ET tomorrow, Sunday, October 6thin order to be eligible to win one of the CHOOSE YOUR OWN PRIZE awards (don't forget to visit that thread and put your prize choices in rank order!). Winners will be announced in the TDP newsletter on Friday 10/11.

Oh I missed it. I kept trying to upload here with errors. Just to show mine.

I am not sure if I followed the instructions well, I hope I did, my head was spinning.

Ha caliten I view instructions as "guidelines". I'm not a great follow the norm person either, and that my friend is why we homeschool hehehehe

Really fun page... amazing how from one set of directions you get so many results. That's what I liked about paper scrapping with sketches... every layout was different. These slow scraps/recipes are helping me learn digi scrapping. Thanks for the challenge.

and just like that, I became the one person who couldn't follow simple instructions.

Thank y'all so much for playing along with our Slow Scrap. I truly enjoyed seeing your take on the directions. My son is on a Science Olympiad team and competes in an event called Write It Do It. In this competition he is given an object and must write out the steps to make it. He can't touch the object or use any type of diagram or pictures in his instructions and must complete this process in 30 minutes. Then his partner has 20 minutes to build the object using only his written instructions. I never fully appreciated how hard this actually was until I started hosting Slow Scraps! Anyhoo, I loved this challenge as y'all had time to make your layouts without stress. They are amazing!

Here is mine using Ordinary Day by Akizo Designs:

This certainly doesn't look rushed to me! I love it! Your stitching is perfect and I really like how you repeated it across the banners as well as your frame and paper pieces.

Kat you always take a few liberties in challenges, and you always make it look so much prettier than mine so I think it's wonderful!!! Gorgeous photos by the way. I'm jealous!

Ohhh love your date tab up top rather than the banner and the way you turned your card into part of your title. Very pretty!

Oh I can only imagine the frustration when he didn't make it on time. But I know you were excited when he did! I love your shadowing on your ribbon Tiffany. I'm trying hard to learn that!

Sure hope I did this right... was fun pushing myself to get it done in under an hour (all the time I had before the deadline!...yikes!).

How did I blend the papers, mocamom, or how did I think to do it?

For the latter, I knew that I wanted to use that Specimen tag from Amie's Wicked collection, and I also wanted a blue-ish paper for the background, but the kit didn't have any. Rather than go to another kit for the background paper, I decided to see what I could come up with using the blend modes.

For the former, there are three papers stacked, from the top down:
    - the cream mesh (cheesecloth as a stamp?) paper at blend mode Divide, 100% opacity
    - the newsprint paper at blend mode Normal, 50% opacity
    - the green and black ornately patterned paper at blend mode Normal, 100% opacity

It took a fair amount of experimentation (trying the different blend modes, and then adjusting the opacity once I'd basically decided which blend mode to use) to get the look I wanted ... something that looked like it could have been dinosaur skin.
Working...
